The Alliance also includes certain research institutions and public health institutions.

Currently, the Board includes representatives of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the United States National Institutes of Health and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition, the GAVI Working Group currently includes representation from the Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

The roles of these and similar institutions in GAVI will be to:

  • Facilitate the agreement of global immunization policies;

  • Work as reference laboratories for surveillance and quality control;

  • Provide technical staff for operations and to help build capacity for research and development.
