Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT)
MNT, which affects newborn babies and their mothers, usually results from unsafe delivery in unhygienic conditions or without skilled birth attendants. WHO estimates that some 281 000 babies die each year.

Tetanus is caused by infection with a bacterium, Clostridium Tetani, which is present in the soil, in animal dung and in faeces and enters the body through wounds.

Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination (MNTE)
UNICEF, WHO and UNFPA agreed 1999 to set the year 2005 as the target date for worldwide elimination.

Medium term expenditure framework (MTEF)
MTEF is an approach or a process that relates resources to priorities. MTEF’s can help improve budget processes and outcomes through greater: clarity of policy objectives; predictability in budget allocations; comprehensiveness of coverage; and transparency in the use of resources. MTEF’s encourage consistency among different aspects of budgetary reform and add a performance focus to budgetary activities.

Meningococcal A/C conjugate vaccine
Meningococcal A or A/C conjugate vaccine is one of the three priority new vaccines identified by the GAVI Board.

The Meningitis Vaccine Project (MVP)
The Meningitis Vaccine Project (MVP), a partnership created in 2001 by WHO and PATH, aims to eliminate epidemic meningitis as a public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa. The objectives of the partnership are to develop meningococcal conjugate vaccines for wide use in Africa, to monitor the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine and to assure its production at low cost.

Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
Adopted in 2000 by representatives from 189 countries, The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are time-limited commitments made by governments throughout the world to reduce poverty and promote human development. There are eight interrelated goals, each with a number of key measurable targets to be met by 2015. GAVI is working towards meeting the child mortality goal (MDG4).

Monodose
Single dose of vaccine in a vial

Monovalent vaccine
Single-substance vaccine

Multi Year Plan for Immunization (MYP)
A plan produced by countries which covers three or more years and addresses EPI issues. GAVI requires countries to submit the MYP along with the standard proposal form.
